Should I Go to University?

This to me is one of the most important questions. We are all sold this rosy dream that if you go to University you will leave with an amazing job.

The fact is, it’s a lie, a glorious myth. We all pretty much know someone who has gone to university and is now doing nothing special with their life other than drowning in student debt.

So my answer to this question is going to be simple. There are just two questions you need to ask yourself:

What Is Your Goal?

You’ve got to ask yourself what you really want to do & if going to university will make it happen.

Unless you need a specialist degree for what you want to do, the answer is usually NO.

Figure out another route or another course that will let you quickly build the skills that you need, and then start working, building, gaining experience and making money.

Sitting in 3 to 4 years of a lectures & seminars is usually not the best way to spend your time in my personal opinion.

Are You Just Following Your Friends?

As my mum used to say, “if your friends jumped off a bridge would you jump too”.

Don’t be a sheep, your friends will always be your friends. You can visit then at Uni, get all the fun benefits, then leave the next day knowing:

  1. You’re not in thousands of pounds of debt
  2. You’re not eating baked beans for dinner and are comfortably ordering that cheeky Nandos, with all the sides!

Ask yourself why you want to go to Uni, don’t just follow your friends or be influenced by your parents moaning over and over again about you going.

Speaking of parents, do your own research about going to Uni. They forget that times have changed.

Things are not the same as they used to be 20 years ago, where having just a degree could change your life.

Also, parents tend to forget that we don’t exist to live their unfulfilled dreams.

“I don’t care if you always dreamt of going to Uni and couldn’t because of blah blah..insert my name somewhere”.

That’s your dream & your excuses, not mine. It’s as simple as that.
